United Statesand the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) announced this Sunday an agreement for Kinshasa to receive deported migrants of third countries from US territory, with the first transfers planned for this month of April.
The Congolese government described the mechanism as a “temporary reception device” in the capital that reflects “human dignity and international solidarity”, and stressed that it does not imply a permanent relocation or the outsourcing of migration policies.
According to theMinistry of Communication of the DRC, all logistical costs of the agreement are borne by Washington, without charge to the Congolese Treasury, and each case will be reviewed individually in accordance with Congolese law and national security requirements.
With this agreement, the DRC becomes the newest African country to join the Trump administration’s program of deportations to third countries, which already includes El Salvador, Eswatini, Ghana, Rwanda, Uganda, South Sudan and Equatorial Guinea.
