What happens when a fast-paced industrial metropolis opens its doors to provide respite for those who have sacrificed everything? In the municipality of Guadalupe, nestled within the Monterrey Metropolitan Area, Casa Nicolás (also known as Casanicolás) stands as one of the most respected, compassionate, and enduring humanitarian sanctuaries along the migrant and refugee trail.

Grassroots Origins Built on Compassion and Social Justice

The story of Casa Nicolás was forged through the grassroots initiative of the San Francisco Xavier parish community and the Congregation of Holy Cross, guided by the pastoral and civic leadership of Father Luis Eduardo Villarreal. Formally incorporated under the civil association Solidaridad en el Éxodo, A.C., the organization emerged to address a heartbreaking reality: the vulnerable and unprotected transit of thousands of men, women, and children along the freight railway corridors of Nuevo León.

Initially envisioned as targeted support for pregnant women facing high vulnerability, the shelter quickly expanded to meet surging migration from Central America (Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala), the Caribbean, and southern Mexico. Today, Casa Nicolás operates as a comprehensive sanctuary providing clean, dignified, and orderly shelter for dozens of guests simultaneously.

Comprehensive Services: Far More Than Just a Warm Meal

At Casa Nicolás, hospitality extends well beyond emergency lodging; it is conceived as a restorative process honoring human dignity. Its holistic care model provides:

  • Safe and Dignified Accommodation: Clean dormitories, resting quarters, hot showers, and community areas.
  • Nutritious Meals: Three freshly prepared meals daily, replenishing energy for travelers exhausted after grueling journeys on freight trains or on foot.
  • Medical and Psychological Care: Wound treatment for trail-worn extremities, basic medication, hygiene care, and psychosocial support for grief and trauma.
  • Legal Guidance and Immigration Support: Specialized legal counsel regarding refugee applications before COMAR, humanitarian regularization with the National Migration Institute (INM), and referrals to UNHCR and IOM.
  • Pastoral Accompaniment: Safe spaces for dialogue, compassionate listening, and community workshops.

“Our calling is not merely to provide a roof; it is to uphold the inherent dignity of every human being in a welcoming environment free of prejudice and criminalization.”

— Father Luis Eduardo Villarreal, Founder and Director of Casanicolás
